NSFW, 2026

Untitled Self-Portrait, 2026
6' x 14'
acrylic and oil on canvas
NSFW was a performance that took place with these two large self-portraits. I spent hours altering clothing to fit my fat body, then stood on the self-portrait of my breasts rolled out on the floor to make social media posts about altering the clothing. Part of this performance is trying on the shirt I altered with different types of bras and no bra. The different ways to contain my large breasts have drastic differences in how I appear in a t-shirt and how people regard me.

Halfway through the semester I did a trial run of the performance. The paintings are at earlier stages in the videos below. I recorded over 4 hours of me altering clothing to fit me. My intention was to bring my practice of altering clothes to fit my fat body into the space where my paintings are displayed. I called this rehearsal Adjusting. The in-progress critique at the end of this performance was by invitation only. I told those who attended my critique that the performance involved nudity, that I would be recording it and that they should avoid the path of the camera if they weren't ok with being recorded and shared on my website and social media. I also had the professor teaching the group critique class send out an invitation to my classmates to stop by and watch any portion of the 4 hour performance -including the warning about recording and posting online.
At the end of the semester, when I performed it for the open critique I did not post warnings. I changed the name to NSFW (not safe for work) and told the professor who taught my class that I would not be posting warnings at the performance. I told him I felt it was the responsibility of the school to post warnings in their facilities, like a gallery does, if they deemed it necessary. When I post warnings it changes the piece. It guides my viewer to a specific conclusion of shame that I do not want to provide.
The professor sent out a warning that my performance would include nudity and that attendance was not necessary.
During the NSFW performance I made two recordings. One, for instagram, where I paused the recording and turned away from the camera and audience to change my bra. The other, for OnlyFans, I changed my bra in front of the camera and audience. I only posted the OnlyFans version because OF has a strict system that does not allow posts with unverified people. It will kick back a video with unverified people. I would have to watch the IG video before posting for 2 reasons. I would need to make sure I did not accidentally record nudity or the audience. IG does not have verification requirements but it would feel inappropriate to post my audience without consent -even though others post during open critiques without consent. Also, if I accidentally posted nudity IG might shutdown my account.
Days after my performance my professor said some people were upset that I posted during my performance. I deleted the post and both recordings.
OnlyFans vs. Instagram
OF is known for sex work but it is just a social media site that allows sexual content. It has a lot of rules. There are many restricted words and everyone in a post must be verified and provide consent to be in a post. It can be difficult to have a normal non-sexual conversation because of all the restricted words. I can't talk to a friend about my joy of spending time with my adult kids because talking about children is not allowed. Those who are not involved in OF posting make assumptions about the people who do. When I began posting on OF it was so I could share my nude artwork. My account was free to access. Instagram was making it difficult to post my work. OF wasn't fully open to sex based art. I made some paintings using my urine as the water and OF didn't allow it. I am not the first artist to use urine. OF is not a free-for-all sex-fest. It is a place that allows nudity and some sexual content.
IG is also used for sex work but it doesn't have that reputation. The sex work on IG is done through messaging. People share suggestive posts and people contact them though DM to arrange a sexual exchange. They allow nudity and sex sent through messages. What IG doesn't do is verification. There are a lot of posts with people who did not give consent to be posted. There are posts made of students at my school on IG that the students did not consent to because IG does not require it and the school does not have a policy against it.
This is, however, the second time I have been pressured to remove social media posts.
People fear sex
The majority of people are the result of sex. The majority of people also like sex. But there is so much fear of sex. It isn't just about consent or protecting children. It is about controlling adult sex lives and sexual expression. My life has been a sex rollercoaster. My work is about that rollercoaster. This work is important to me. I hope I find more places that allow me to explore it more freely.
