Artist Statement

Kristina Cain focuses on the relationship between sexual experience online and the formation of individual identity by analyzing social norms that impede our ability to express ourselves authentically, changing how we present of ourselves and requiring us to find places with anonymity for taboo expression. How does a person find a healthy self-esteem in a world of constant categorization? Who is empowered or made vulnerable by online sexual expression? How does a person navigate social norms and find sexual agency? What happens to conceptions of self when experiencing sexual feedback online? To examine these questions, she experiments with the meaning of pornographic and vulgar language and how taboo ideas connect to her self-portraits and ‘dick pic’ paintings sourced from her online posts.
